What Is Cheek Augmentation?
Sunken cheeks can give you an older and hollow appearance. At Sawan Surgical Aesthetics, plastic surgeon Dr. Kamal Sawan offers cheek augmentation to lift the cheeks for a more youthful look. Cheek augmentation is accomplished in two ways: either minimally invasive injectable fillers or longer-lasting silicone implants. In your initial consultation, Dr. Sawan will review your needs and goals, as well as the pros and cons of both choices in greater detail. Call our Oklahoma City, OK office to schedule a consultation in order to find out how cheek augmentation may help you attain a fuller, younger-looking appearance.

"Dr. Sawan is a miracle worker. Had eye surgery, upper and lower kids, and now look much better, and healthier. Not surgeries that look obvious that you had eye lift surgery. I asked him for a natural and healthy look. I’m “very” pleased, and his staff is wonderful. Highly recommend you see him before choosing anyone else."- J.T. / Office Visit / Sep 25, 2020
Can I Get Cheek Augmentation?
You may be a great candidate for cheek augmentation if you:
- Want more volume in your mid-face
- Have lost volume in your cheeks with age
- Have genetically hollow or flat cheeks
- Have lost a large amount of weight, causing deflated cheeks
- Have asymmetry in your mid-face from a congenital defect, a physical condition, or an accident
- Are in good general health
Dermal fillers can be a good choice for cheek augmentation if you want to avoid the expense and time of surgical implants. Since dermal fillers are temporary, it may also be useful to get a better idea of how much volume and lift you want before getting cheek implants. Surgical cheek augmentation with implants is a good choice if you're looking for longer-lasting results and are able to spend time recovering after surgery.
How Is Cheek Augmentation Performed?
Before your treatment, Dr. Sawan will listen to your goals and needs, then perform a thorough exam to create a personalized treatment plan that will best match your goals. In your initial consultation, you will also choose your preferred method: dermal fillers or cheek implants.
If you choose to use dermal fillers for your cheek augmentation, the procedure will be done at our Edmond, OK office as an outpatient procedure in an estimated 20 – 30 minutes. Before your treatment, the points of injection will be marked along the hollows of your cheeks. Then, the dermal filler will be gently injected into the cheeks and massaged to create an even fullness. You can leave immediately after the treatment and continue your daily activities.
If you choose to have surgical cheek augmentation, it is performed as an outpatient procedure in an accredited facility since you will likely be sedated using general anesthesia. Once you are prepped, small incisions are created inside the upper gums so a pocket can be made above the cheekbones. Next, the selected implants will be placed and the incisions in the mouth will be sutured. Cheek implant surgery typically takes about an hour, and you will be released to a responsible adult to start your recovery at home.
What Should I Expect After My Cheek Augmentation?
If you had cheek augmentation surgery, you may have tightness, swelling, and bruising for about 1 – 2 weeks after your surgery. Strenuous activity that causes your facial muscles to strain (such as weight lifting or other exercises) will need to be skipped for about 7 – 10 days. Total healing usually takes about two months; however, the results are long-lasting.
If your cheek augmentation involved injections of dermal fillers, your mid-face may be sore or tender with mild inflammation for about 3 – 5 days. Cold packs and nonprescription pain relievers can be used to ease any discomfort. Optimal results are usually seen after about 10 – 14 days. Maintenance injections will be required because fillers are a short-term option.
